Chapter 18

E pi didn’t stir as Nick slid from the bed. He tiptoed out of the room and took a seat at the kitchen table. The blanket rustled at the broken window; however, nothing looked disturbed in the room. Nick decided to leave well enough alone rather than check to see if the Goatman was lurking outside. Instead, he pulled up Becky’s number but had trouble finding the nerve to make the call.

To find the right words, he would need a minute. This conversation would have bigger implications than what was troubling Nick presently. It would be about their past too. And he’d get only one chance to win her back. As much as he hated to admit it— that’s what he wanted. She was his person.

Becky was Nick’s first in just about every category. He didn’t have much to compare her to, but he considered her the ideal girlfriend. She was fun, smart, sexy, and spontaneous in and out of the bedroom. He was absolutely smitten— she was his everything. They would’ve had a perfect life together if not for that one unfortunate event.

Since Becky was his first girlfriend, Nick was a virgin when they met. Becky wasn’t. She’d been in a few relationships in high school and one in college before meeting Nick, and she’d done things that teenagers do. Nick never judged. In fact, it took some of the pressure off of him to make her first time extra-special. Instead, she knew how to make it special for both of them. Though with her experience, Nick worried he wouldn’t be enough man for her. Yet for the better part of two years, everything was great.

Since they spent most of their free time together, they decided to rent a one-bedroom apartment to save on expenses. They shared the household duties. There was no drama. They hardly fought even with their different personalities. Nick was introverted; Becky was social and loved to go to parties. He got it. She was young and wanted to have fun. He wasn’t worried. She’d settle down once they were married.

Everything was perfect … until Becky became pregnant. She’d been on the pill. She’d sworn she hadn’t missed one, and Nick knew it was only ninety-nine percent effective. Still, it was quite a surprise when the test came back positive.

Given his own childhood, Nick never thought he’d want to be a parent, but he quickly warmed to the idea. Sure the timing wasn’t ideal, but he thought they could make it work. Becky remained unconvinced, but in the end, the decision was made for them when she lost the baby. Nick was a mess. Becky too for a time. She eventually got over it, but not Nick, no matter how hard she tried to pull him out of his funk. Eventually, she moved in with a girlfriend to give their relationship some space. She broke up with him two weeks later.

He didn’t blame her— staying with him would’ve been like living with a ghost. But Nick still loved her.
